Budapest Airport has held a roof topping ceremony for the new Pier B on the Terminal 2B (T2B) side of Liszt Ferenc International Airport.

KÉSZ Építő Zrt is serving as the construction contractor and Budapest Airport as the project developer.

With physical construction on the new facility commenced in March this year, the project is expected to be completed by the second half of next year.

Once complete, the project will help increase the passenger area of the Non-Schengen terminal T2B by more than 10,000m2.

Budapest Airport chief technical officer Stephan Schattney said: “It is important that we can now start to close the building with roof and facades.

“This allows us to continue with the interior finishes during the winter season. We are now targeting late spring for completion of the building shell.

The total construction cost of Pier B at Liszt Ferenc Airport is more than Ft7.8bn (€25m).

Fully financed by Budapest Airport, the 220m-long Pier B will feature ten new boarding bridges and will be able to provide the passengers with 27 different boarding options, in line with different airline requirements, through contact gates, using a bus, or walk-on boarding.

Connected to T2B, the new facility will be able to simultaneously accommodate up to ten narrow-body aircraft of the Boeing B737 and Airbus A320 families, or three wide-body aircraft of the Boeing B777 and Airbus A330 families.

Pier B is expected to increase the annual passenger handling capacity of Budapest Airport by five million to six million.

The construction of the facility is one of the major components of Budapest Airport’s five-year, Ft50bn (approximately €160m) airport development project.

Called BUD 2020, the airport development project is expected to be completed by the end of 2020.
