Xsight Systems has added a new feature, BirdWize to its automatic Foreign Object Debris detection solution (FODetect) to help airports effectively track and reduce ground-level avian-related threats.
The improved FODetect is capable of detecting birds in real time, in severe weather and in all light conditions.

According to reports, over half of bird strikes occur during night time, costing the aviation industry millions of dollars.
Xsight Systems president and CEO Alon Nitzan said that the new product enhancement will enable airport operators to better detect and monitor threats from ground-level birds on the runway.
"40% of all bird-related incidents happen on the ground, and this solution provides airport personnel with a more effective way to track birds and their behaviour patterns," Nitzan said.
"With BirdWize, airport traffic can now run smoother, potential damage to aircrafts can be avoided, and passengers and crew are safer."

By GlobalDataXsight Systems’ new solution also incorporates a dual technology sensor, with millimetre-wave radar and electro-optic abilities, together with radar and image processing, which help to detect ground-level threats from FOD and birds if they appear on the runway.
The new solution enables automatic bird recognition and allows operators to know the size of the bird, which would allow RunWize to send real-time detection alerts to the airport’s wildlife team.
Features include a comprehensive reporting system that files all detected birds and other objects for future investigations on bird behaviour patterns and improved wildlife hazard assessments.
"This technology is an enhancement to our leading FODetect solution and a critical asset to manage threats from ground-level birds and other objects on the runway," Nitzan said.
"For the first time, airport operators have the ability to detect and remove objects as they appear on runway surfaces in between flights, a huge advantage to improve runway safety and operations.
"The ability to analyse the size and timing of birds that land on the runway is also a significant addition, and it gives airports the potential to better understand bird behaviour patterns and how they impact airport operations."
