UAE signs deal with Airbus ProSky to restructure airspace

The UAE General Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA) has collaborated with Airbus ProSky to restructure the country's airspace.

The UAE General Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA) has collaborated with Airbus ProSky to restructure the country’s airspace.

Ahead of the worl Airbus ProSky will conduct a study consulting all airspace users, navigation services providers and airports of the UAE and deliver a comprehensive report in summer 2013, identifying ways to enhance airspace.

GCAA director general HE Saif Al Suwaidi said that it is very important to seek continuous enhancement of UAE’s airspace to better serve the rising air traffic movement and to be at the forefront of air navigation services providers internationally.

"We will work closely with Airbus ProSky in the next few months to understand what changes we need to bring to our airspace and ATM systems to better serve airspace users," Al Suwaidi said.

Airbus Middle East Sales vice president François Cognard said: "GCAA is rightfully preparing for the future and we look forward to bringing Airbus ProSky expertise to support all UAE aviation stakeholders and the GCAA in its endeavour to safely encourage traffic growth in the region."

UAE airspace is one of the smallest and most vital in the world and is known for its strategic location, which links the east and west.

The study could lead to improvement to ATM at Sheikh Zayed Air Navigation Center, which opened in 2009, making the Middle East’s largest and most advanced air traffic management facility.

According to GACA, the centre serves around 2,000 air traffic movements per day for the UAE’s eight international airports in addition to the over flying movements.

Additionally, the centre hosts nine air traffic sectors and the approach air traffic services to Al Ain International Airport .
