The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) is to install millimetre wave advanced imaging technology (AIT) devices at 29 airports in the US.
The machines will be deployed with new automated target recognition software designed to improve privacy by eliminating passenger-specific images.
AIT enhances security by safely screening passengers for metallic and non-metallic threats that includes weapons, explosives and other objects concealed under layers of clothing.
