Rohde & Schwarz, based in Germany, has delivered a fully equipped R&S MX400 mobile air traffic control tower to the Indonesian air traffic control (ATC ) authorities of the Directorate General Civil Aviation (DGCA).

The DGCA said that the mobile ATC tower can be used across the country to coordinate relief flights in disaster areas to manage flight operation where local ATC infrastructure is damaged due to adverse weather conditions.

The tower, which has room for two controller working positions (CWP) and a supervisor, can be lifted to an operating height of around 7m through a hydraulic scissor-type mechanism.

The power for airfield operations can be provided by a separate one axle trailer with a diesel generator which can be deployed wherever and whenever required.

R&S MX400 mobile ATC is equipped with R&S Serie4200 ATC radios and the company’s IP-based R&S VCS-4G voice communications system.

R&S Serie4200 ATC radios, which have a VHF frequency range between 112MHz to 156MHz and UHF frequency range between 225MHz to 400MHz, can also be software-configured to be operated as single-channel radios.

The radios will further support digital voice transmission through ITU-T G.703 PCM interface and VoIP compliant with EUROCAE specifications.

The R&S VCS-4G will facilitate communications between air traffic controllers and pilots by enabling various ATC features, which include intercom and telephony services and interworking to other ATC systems.

R&S VCS-4G uses commercial-off-the-shelf (COTS) products for reduced system costs and offers a single centralised monitoring system for both the R&SVCS-4G and Rohde & Schwarz radios.

In addition, the tower has also been equipped with integrated HF radio system based on the R&S XK2100 series, a voice recording system, a meteorological information system and interfaces which will facilitate to connect to the local telecommunications infrastructure.
