Quad-City International Airport in Illinois, US, will open its $34m runway on 15 October 2011, one month ahead of schedule.

The airport initiated the project, known as Runway 9/27, in April 2011 and construction work was scheduled to be complete by 15 November 2011.

The project involved the replacement of a large section of the airport’s main runway; to keep the airport operational, a temporary runway, Runway 10/28, was built in 2010 and opened in April 2011.

The temporary runway will be decommissioned by 2012 and converted into a taxiway, according to qctimes.com.
