Dubai International airport in the UAE recorded a 13.7% rise in traffic to 27.9 million passengers during the first half (H1) of 2012, compared to 24.5 million passengers registered during the corresponding period in 2011.
According to operator Dubai Airports, the average monthly passenger traffic was 4.65 million during the first six months of 2012, up from the 4.09 million recorded during the same period in 2011.
During H1 2012, the airport reported a 2.2% rise in its air cargo volumes to 1,086,456t compared to 1,062,724t handled during the same period the previous year.
Aircraft movements at Dubai international increased by 6.8% to 170,249, when compared with the 159,372 from H1 in 2011.
The routes that tallied the highest passenger traffic include India, Saudi Arabia, the UK, Pakistan and the US.
The Gulf region recorded the highest rise in traffic with 180,397 passengers, while Western Europe registered 124,690 and the Indian Sub-Continent 82,543.
In terms of percentage passenger growth, South America registered the highest rise of 140.9%, followed by Russia and the CIS region with 54.4%, and Australasia with a 26.3% rise.
Dubai Airports CEO Paul Griffiths said the airport is on track to meet the annual projected traffic of 56.5 million passengers, which is very close to Dubai International’s operational capacity of 60 million passengers per year.
"The addition of Concourse 3 during the first quarter of 2013 is well timed to boost our capacity to 75 million, while upping the game on our already high levels of customer service," Griffiths said.
During June 2012, Dubai International served 4.7 million passengers, reporting a 16% rise from the 4.06 million handled during the corresponding month in 2011.
Freight traffic at the airport rose 6.3% to 194,992t during June, up from the 183,365t handled during June 2011, while aircraft movements were up 5.1% to 27,428 from the 26,101 registered during the same month in 2011.
