Myrtle Beach International Airport in South Carolina, US, has opened its new $118m terminal, which is scheduled to commence operations on 2 April 2013.

The new facility features additional space and gates for airplanes, as well as remote check-in kiosks and a new range of restaurants.

Myrtle Beach Area Chamber of Commerce president Brad Dean said: "This is a big deal not just for the airport but the entire Grand Strand and it positions us for growth in the future."

"The new facility features additional space and gates for airplanes, as well as remote check-in kiosks and a new range of restaurants."

The project involved the construction of a baggage handling system and installation of inbound and outbound bag-belts. Additionally, the new terminal is equipped with L-3’s explosive detection systems for security purposes.

The airport has also prepared permanent signage and wayfinding along the terminal access road.

Spanning an area of around 1,536ha, the airport has a single runway 18/36 that measures 9,503ft × 150ft (2,897m × 46m).

The airport has also built a new general aviation terminal, which was expected to serve 45,000 passengers from private aircraft per year.

Myrtle Beach International currently serves 28 non-stop destinations, with the new terminal set to allow it to increase its destinations and flights.
