UK-based aircraft maintenance provider Monarch Aircraft Engineering (MAEL) has started construction on a new hangar facility at Birmingham Airport.
Commencement of construction on the 110,000ft² facility follows plans revealed in November 2012, with scheduled completion by the end of 2013.
MAEL said that the facility will incorporate enhanced design, technology and build standards to accommodate large passenger jets, including the Boeing 787 Dreamliner and ten narrow-body aircraft.
According to the aircraft maintenance provider, the new facility will create around 150 jobs upon its opening, with a further 150 jobs expected in the future.
The Birmingham facility, which is supported by several component-repair and back shops as well as a logistics centre, is expected to complement the aircraft engineering firm’s existing heavy maintenance facilities at the UK’s London Luton and Manchester Airports.
The airport has also commenced work on a £33m runway extension project as part of a programme to enable handling direct long-haul flights.
Under the project, the runway will be extended by 405m to 3,003m so that aircraft will fly with more fuel loads towards long-haul destinations, including China, South America, South Africa and the West Coast of the US, upon the commencement of operations in 2014.
The airport is also investing £9m on resurfacing the whole runway as well as £13m for the construction of a new air traffic control tower and radar system.
Currently handling 9.6 million passengers per year, the investment is expected to allow the airport to double its capacity and serve more routes.
