Engineering specialists MIRA are planning to target the airport industry as a commercial market for their unmanned ground vehicle (UGV) system, the MIRA Autonomous Control Equipment (MACE).
The company believes that the autonomous battlefield-proven technology will offer a new perimeter security option to airports and help protect infrastructure and people.
MIRA UGV systems senior global sales manager Rob Mohacsi said that whilst security inside terminals can prevent terrorists and equipment boarding an aircraft, without securing the airport perimeter – including unauthorised access areas – activities to sabotage airport infrastructure could be missed.
"UGV technology is able to secure airport perimeters, providing unrivalled perimeter awareness and quick threat detection using MACE technology," Mohacsi said.
Capable of transforming any vehicle for remote and autonomous operations from a 20km central location, MACE enables the monitoring of airport perimeters both visually and by using surveillance hardware and software suited to the specific task.
According to MIRA, remote-controlled operations will help avoid injuries to personnel, as well as allow for 24/7 operations, dead ground surveillance and the ability to patrol larger distances.

By GlobalDataThe vehicle can be operated remotely in three methods, including a handheld device, a mobile vehicle-mounted option and an operator desk, the company said.
"As threats continue to evolve UGV technology is able to adapt to accommodate changing security needs, and is especially suited to covering large airport perimeters that can be difficult to monitor and protect," Mohacsi said.
Previous MIRA customers include UK MOD, BAe Systems, Lockheed Martin, General Dynamics and NP Aerospace.
