Virgin Australia, in collaboration with Melbourne airport, has commenced renovations at Terminal 3 as part of the airport’s A$1bn ($1bn) five-year infrastructure investment programme.
The improvement to the terminal’s passenger area, which will be completed in late 2012, will enhance the travel experience for domestic travellers, as well give the terminal a contemporary look.
The revamp will create a new corporate Lounge to support Virgin Airlines’ plan for trans-continental A330 services and increase flights to Brisbane, Sydney and Hobart.
Virgin Australia Chief Operating Officer Sean Donohue said Melbourne is one of the company’s busiest domestic airports, serving over seven million passengers every year.
"In addition to this programme of works, we are also on track to introduce a premium valet service at Melbourne Airport, later this year," Donohue said.
Melbourne Airport CEO Chris Woodruff said that the airport, working closely with Virgin Australia, will deliver a better experience for the passengers.
"All flights will continue to operate normally from T3 during the refurbishment and we’ll be working closely with Virgin Australia and our other airline customers to minimise inconvenience for passengers while the work is being carried out," Woodruff said.
Australia Pacific Airports (Melbourne), the operator of Melbourne Airport has also prepared a preliminary draft major development plan for its integrated landside and airside development.
The development will be located in the south side of the existing main terminal building, currently occupied by the existing T4 building.
Melbourne Airport has reported 2.2% rise in its international passenger traffic in April 2012 when compared to the same period in 2011, which was mainly contributed by this year’s earlier Easter holiday period.
