Melbourne Airport Melbourne Airport in Australia is planning to invest around A$200m to enhance its facilities and access to the airport.

Being built as part of the airport’s Forecourt Redevelopment Stage 2 project, the new fourth lane is expected to reduce traffic congestion in and around the airport.

Melbourne Airport CEO Chris Woodruff said that the financial year had commenced with enhanced traffic for both international and domestic passengers.

"We will continue to support our future growth and, this year, we’ll spend more than $200 million on improving our facilities and access to Melbourne Airport," Woodruff said.

"We have a number of key internal road projects and traffic flow improvements underway, including further redevelopment of our forecourt area."

According to the airport, 25 more pick-up bays will be added to its forecourt area alongside widening the entry to Arrivals Drive that offers a slip lane dedicated to couriers and trucks through the loading dock.

"The airport reported a 6% rise in its passenger traffic during Q1 2012/13."

Melbourne Airport is also planning to install a new PA system, additional lighting and extra CCTV cameras in a bid to enhance security within the airport premises.

Expected to be complete in the first quarter of 2013, the project follows work completed in December 2011 that included the re-alignment of traffic to separate the buses and taxis from general public vehicles.

The airport reported a 6% rise in its passenger traffic during Q1 2012/13 to 7.45 million when compared to the same quarter last year.

During the period, Melbourne Airport reported a 4% rise in its international passenger traffic, while its domestic passenger traffic increased 7% over the corresponding period in 2011.
