London Southend Airport in the UK is set to begin a €12m terminal extension project in early November 2012.

Kier, as a prime contractor, will be responsible for work and construction of the three-phased extension project.

Construction of a new arrivals facility will be taken up in the initial phase, with completion scheduled by the end of May 2013.

London Southend Airport managing director Alastair Welch said that the airport’s objective is to enhance customer service levels in Southend and this extension will assist the airport in delivering high standards as it grows.

"This is also further evidence of the role the redeveloped airport is playing in supporting the regeneration of the wider Essex economy," Welch said.

Completion of the project will see expansion of the terminal building to 90m long, a rise in number of check-in desks/baggage drop off points and adding space for passengers in security.

"Construction of a new arrivals facility will be taken up in the initial phase, with completion scheduled by the end of May 2013."

The Departure Lounge will be expanded to improve the passengers’ experience while they relax and await boarding following security.

Kier Construction operations director Nick Bache said: "An important project for the Essex region, the terminal extension will provide some fantastic improvements for passengers and will enable us to utilise our extensive airport experience."

The airport’s Arrivals area will be equipped with improved baggage reclaim facilities, while the immigration space will undergo expansion, in addition to larger retail and catering facilities through the terminal to provide passengers with a wide range of shops and services.

London Southend Airport anticipates the final phase to be finished ahead of Christmas 2013.
