Indra has been awarded a contract by Azerbaijan’s air navigation service provider, AZANS, to install a new air traffic control (ATC) centre in the capital, Baku.

According to AZANS, the new ATC centre will help in transforming Heydar Aliyev International Airport in Baku into a regional hub, enhancing its passenger handling capacity.

The contract includes installation of Indra’s automated air traffic management (ATM) system and SDC-2100 digital voice communications system, which is expected to support en route, approach and tower air controls.

Incorporating the new network security capabilities, which include ADS, CPDLC, P-RNAV, Indra’s automated ATM system will allow handling of more flights and facilitate safe traffic operation in coordination with other centres.

The company’s voice communications system, based on the IP protocol (VoIP), is expected to raise security levels.

In a move to support Baku’s tourism industry, AZANS is also planning to build two new runways and an additional terminal at Heydar Aliyev International Airport.

A new 58,000m² terminal is under construction at Heydar Aliyev International Airport, which, following its completion in 2013, is expected to handle three million passengers per year.

Features of the new terminal, which is structured over two main floor levels, include baggage reclaim area, forward bussing lounges and baggage makeup facilities, in addition to retail space.

Indra has also installed its ATM solutions in Eastern European countries which include Poland, Ukraine, Turkey, Lithuania and Bosnia and Herzegovina, as well as in the Asian countries of India, Mongolia and China.
