Harris has delivered the first operational voice over internet protocol (VoIP) radio control capability into the US National Airspace System (NAS) as an enabler for the NextGen air transportation system.
Harris’ Liberty Radio Control Equipment (RCE) is currently operational at the Federal Aviation Administration’s (FAA’s) Air Route Traffic Control Center in Houston, Texas, which offers air / ground radio communications for the Gulf of Mexico.
Liberty RCE can imitate any radio link and offers radio control over various transmission mediums, including analogue, T-1/E-1 and Ethernet/IP.
The system offers communication to isolated areas where there is little digital service compatible with satellite communications and where analogue technology is used for communication.
FAA selected the Liberty RCE as an interim solution, following technical issues with the use of old RCE while installing a remote air / ground communications facility in the Gulf of Mexico.
The Liberty RCE system has been designed to multiplex voice and data signals broadcasted between ATC facilities and local or remote radios over standard telecommunications links.
The system offers interfaces for digital voice, legacy analogue voice, SatCom, datalink, ADS-B, TIS-B, FIS-B and other data services, and enables deployment with any voice communication and control system, and with all ATM radios.
Harris is the prime contractor for the FAA Telecommunications Infrastructure (FTI) programme, which offers voice, data and video communications for NAS operations and mission support operations.
FTI connects over 4,300 national and international FAA and DoD facilities and supervises over 26,000 services, while supporting more than 50,000 users.
