Frankfurt Airport in Germany is installing Honeywell‘s SmartPath precision landing system (PLS) to reduce noise levels and improve efficiency of landings.

The system will be operational at the German airport in the third quarter of 2014.

Smartpath is a development over traditional instrument landing systems (ILS). It enables precision approach and landing of aircraft by using the GPS (global positioning system) signals.

"A growing number of airports see GBAS as the future of precision approach."

According to Honeywell, Smartpath is the world’s only certified Ground-Based Augmentation System (GBAS).

Honeywell Aerospace SmartPath senior product manager Pat Reines said: "With significant passenger growth occurring at many airports globally, the pressure on traditional ILS systems to support increasing traffic volumes is greater than ever before.

"Unlike ILS, GBAS supports multiple approaches simultaneously, reducing airspace congestion and lowering airport noise and emissions. For airports such as Frankfurt that are ambitious about growth, Honeywell’s SmartPath GBAS represents a cost-effective, easy-to-install alternative to ILS."

SmartPath simultaneously supports up to 26 separate approaches enabling Air Traffic Control to be flexible with its approaches, and increasing airport capacity.

Frankfurt is one of more than 15 airports globally to have adopted Honeywell’s system, and the second in Germany after Bremen International Airport.

Air navigation service provider DFS Deutsche Flugsicherung head of navigation services Stefan Naerlich said: "A growing number of airports see GBAS as the future of precision approach.

"DFS is a world leader in, and a driving force behind, the adoption of GBAS, and at Frankfurt we also have an ambitious global airport operator in Fraport, who supports us on this programme."
