The US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has awarded a $6.2m single-source contract to Verocel to develop its next generation of safety computers to be used in the wide area augmentation system (WAAS).

WAAS is an air navigation aid, developed to enhance the efficiency of the global positioning system (GPS), enabling aircrafts to depend on GPS for all phases of a flight, including precision approaches to any airport.

Verocel will design, construct and validate the new safety computer, including infrastructure software, as per the safety specification, as well as supporting FAA in the relocation and verification efforts for the application software.

Verocel president George Romanski said: "We are leading all phases of the WAAS safety computer development, specification and design effort, including hardware, system integration and test, software verification and more, all the way through to finished-goods manufacturing and delivery."

The new safety computers, which will be compliant with RTCA/DO-178B1 and RTCA/DO-2542 to Level B, will replace FAA’s existing ones and offer the required resource capacity to execute the safety computer functions assigned in the WAAS architecture.

The company has also developed DO-178B certification packages for the Wind River VxWorks operating system, currently being used in WAAS.
