Dubai International Airport (DXB) recorded a 19% rise in its passenger traffic to 4.5 million compared to 3.83 million reported in the corresponding month in 2011.

The airport also reported a 9.8% rise in the aircraft movements to 27,058 movements when compared to the same month last year.

Dubai Airports CEO, Paul Griffiths, said: "February marks the twelfth consecutive month with passenger traffic exceeding the four million mark, and with the growth expected to maintain momentum in the coming months the airport is on track to achieve the targeted 56.5 million passenger traffic for 2012."

"The completion of the Concourse 3 project by the end of 2012 is in line with this forecast and will expand Dubai International Airport ‘s capacity at the right time, ensuring that our growth continues unhindered," Griffiths said.

DXB’s cargo volume rose 6.5% during the period to 157,492t compared to 147,937t recorded during the same month during the previous year.

The increase in cargo volume was attributed to the Chinese New Year and the ongoing expansion of Emirates network which has enhanced cargo movements through Dubai.

Passengers from the Gulf region have contributed to the largest increase in passenger numbers in February to 150,643, which was followed by the Indian subcontinent reporting 140,322 while the airport handled 136,320 passengers from Western Europe and 110,561 passengers from Africa.

While the Middle Eastern routes reported decline in passenger traffic to 23,804 passengers during the period.

DXB can handle a passenger capacity of about 60 million passengers per year, while the airport is expecting to handle 75 million passengers by next year with the launch of Emirates Airline’s Concourse 3.
