German air navigation service provider (ANSP) DFS Deutsche Flugsicherung has started using its Precision Approach Monitor (PAM) at Frankfurt Airport.
PAM has been integrated with Thales’ Wide Area Multilateration (WAM) system, the first operational WAM system in Germany, which is designed for use in congested airspace.
The new system updates aircraft information every second on its radar screen, which is an improvement when compared to the existing system that updates information every five seconds.
Set to offer air traffic controllers an improved and more precise display of aircraft arriving at or departing from Frankfurt Airport, the system will enhance the airport’s safety standards.
Additionally, the system takes much less time to identify and correct variations from allocated routings.
The required information is collected from 34 sensors that have been spread evenly in the area surrounding the airport, up to a distance of 120km, and display the data at the control centre in Langen, south of Frankfurt.
Using the PAM system, aircraft send signals so that their position can be calculated and viewed within one second. Earlier radar systems use two-way propagation delay of electromagnetic signals from transmitters to determine aircraft position.
The system has a lower limit of 150m and upper limit of 300m within the control area above ground level, while the remaining area is covered from around 900m above ground level.
The PAM system also provides aircraft information to ground level at Frankfurt Airport and Frankfurt-Hahn Airport.
