Bechtel has completed construction of the $2.4bn Terminal 3 building at McCarran International Airport in Las Vegas, US.

The 1.9m ft2 terminal building will connect to the current Terminals 1 and 2 and, once operational, will increase capacity to 53m passengers per year from a peak of 48m handled in 2007.

The 14-gate, three-storey facility features digital signage, including 900 NEC large-screen displays and 800 single-board computers, self-boarding technology at each gate and a modern baggage claim system.

There are security checkpoints on two levels, along with public art installations and free passenger Wi-Fi access, alongside power access for digital and electronic devices.

The new terminal incorporates common-use systems to enable airlines to time-share facilities based upon their operational times, and new self-boarding gates to speed up the boarding process.

The new terminal will have automated aircraft docking systems, enabling pilots to precisely align with a passenger loading bridge creating the need for minimal ramp staff support.

The cost of the new terminal will be refunded through the airport’s cash flow over the next 25 years.
