Heathrow Airport

BAA, the UK’s main airport operator, has reported a 4% rise in passenger traffic in March to 8.6 million passengers compared to last year.

Heathrow airport in London has reported 6.9% rise in passenger traffic to 5.7 million passengers when compared to same month last year, recording about 70 million passengers over a 12 month period crossing its earlier record of 60 million in 1998.

BAA said that the pre-Easter traffic falling in March rather than in April last year has contributed to the rise during the period.

The airport reported a 4.2% rise in load factor to 73.4% during the period when compared to the same period in 2011, while a 0.1% rise in cargo volume was also reported over the same period.

Passenger traffic from Heathrow to the Brazil, Russia, India and China (BRIC) also rose when compared to the same period in 2011, while passenger traffic registered a 62.3% rise to and from Brazil in March this year.

Glasgow airport in Scotland has reported a 4.6% rise while Aberdeen recorded a rise of 10.2% during the period, which was contributed by the rise in domestic oil related traffic.

Passenger traffic at Stansted, Edinburgh and Southampton was down 4.7%, 2.8% and 1.7% respectively during the period, which was due to the reduced domestic traffic.

North Atlantic reported a rise in passenger traffic to 13.6% while the other long haul traffic has reported a rise of about 5.2% during March.

During the period, the scheduled traffic in Europe has increased 3.2% while the European Charter traffic reported a high rise due to the strong ski season in the continent.
