Airports in the Asia-Pacific region recorded a 10.8% rise in passenger traffic in March 2012, according to a report from Airport Council International (ACI ).

ACI Passenger and Freight Flash Reports said that airports in the Middle Eastern region registered a 16.4% rise in passenger traffic, when compared to the same period the earlier year.

Traffic at Japanese airports appears to have recovered from the negative impact of the last year’s earthquake in East Japan, as well as the nuclear incident during March last year.

Japan’s Tokyo Narita (NRT) airport recorded the highest rise in passenger traffic of 30.3%, while Tokyo Haneda (HND) and Osaka Kansai (KIX) airports both registered growth with 28.8% and 20.3%, respectively.

ACI reported that Beijing (PEK) recorded the highest traffic in the region by handling around 6.6 million passengers, followed by Tokyo Haneda (HND) with 5.8 million during the period.

The other airports that topped the list included Dubai (DXB), Bangkok (BKK) and Jakarta (CGK), which handled over 4.7 million passengers in March.

The region’s air freight traffic in March remained slow; Asia-Pacific airports recorded a 1.9% decline year-on-year and a 1.3% fall year-to-date, while Middle Eastern airports reported a year-on-year rise of 0.8% in air freight traffic and a 2.6% increase year-to-date.

ACI Asia-Pacific regional director Patti Chau said: "While we are pleased to see the continuous growth in the passenger traffic in the region, especially the strong rebound of the Japanese airports, the air freight market remains a concern where the path of recovery is still unclear."

ACI report also revealed that the passenger traffic at the airports in the Asia-Pacific and Middle Eastern areas during the first quarter rose 9.3% and 14.9% respectively, when compared to the corresponding period last year.
