The air traffic management (ATM) consultancies APAC and Helios have been selected by the Air Navigation Service Providers (ANSPs) of Austria, Czech Republic and Hungary to support the management of a functional airspace block (FAB) in seven Central European (CE) countries.

Under the deal, the companies will address issues related to legal establishment, implementation and operations. The seven countries included in the block are Austria, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, Czech Republic, Hungary, Slovakia and Slovenia.

Engineers from both companies will provide project management services to the FAB CE initiative up until the end of 2012, which can be extended for three years on a yearly basis.

The team will support the initiative in meeting its end of 2012 time limit, in addition to organising the implementation of the FAB and its functional life.

The FAB CE initiative will help in accommodating additional air traffic in the region, which is expected to rise by 60% by 2017, while at the same time reduce flight delays.

In November 2009, the FAB CE countries signed a MoU to set up FAB CE Preparatory (Phase) structures and a general framework of cooperation among the members.

The APAC and Helios team offered consulting and managing projects for NSPs, for national supervisory authorities (NSAs), in addition to other air traffic management organisations, including the European Commission and the military.

Both have earlier worked on projects for FAB CE, which include developing a cost-benefit analysis and a scheme to supervise performance of FAB.
