Airservices has secured a contract to modernise and upgrade the control tower at Gold Coast Airport in Australia as part of an air traffic control towers and systems modernisation programme across the country.

Under the upgrade programme, which covers 28 towers and systems, the 1989-built control tower complex at Gold Coast Airport will get ecologically sustainable items such as rain water tanks and energy-efficient plumbing and lighting systems.

The programme will also replace ageing mechanical, electrical, security and fire services with modern energy-efficient systems.

The $2.3m refurbishment work will extend the life of the tower by another 20 years.

The work has begun and will be completed by February 2012.
