ADB Airfield Solutions has been selected by the Iraqi Civil Aviation Authority (ICAA) and AFM Group to upgrade Basra International Airport.

As part of the contract, ADB will deliver and install equipment and systems that support CAT II airfield operations, including airfield ground lighting, power solutions, constant current regulators, and airfield lighting control and monitoring systems.

The equipment is aimed at allowing the airport’s maintenance personnel to remotely examine airfield ground lighting and enhance operational and cost efficiency, while easing maintenance.

Work at Basra International, which is Iraq’s second busiest airport, includes design, project management and consultancy, testing and commissioning.

Expected to be completed by April 2014, work Basra International will allow safer landings and increased flights during the night and in poor weather conditions, while enhancing air connectivity to Basra province.

ADB CEO Christian Onselaere said: "The Basra International Airport project is a part of a major initiative by the Iraqi Government to completely modernise the country’s military and commercial airport infrastructure and prepare for economic growth."

ADB has already supported airport modernisations at Iraq’s Baghdad International Airport and Erbil International Airport in Kurdistan, which is another oil and gas hub.
