The Airports Authority of India (AAI) is planning to install a GPS-aided geo augmented navigation system (Gagan) at all airports in the country by June 2013.

Developed in a joint-venture between AAI and Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), the system is expected to enhance air traffic management by integrating Met data and aeronautical information.

Gagan is designed to provide accurate and reliable statistics that enable users to rely on GPS for all phases of their flight. The system will provide information related to wind speed, which could help pilots to correct flight paths accordingly.

Indian Air Navigation Services member V Somasundaram told PTI: "By virtue of this system, human intervention will be minimised or eliminated for navigational guidance, both at air traffic control room and aircraft cockpit."

The system will become operational following the launch of the third Gagan payload into space and will provide accurate aircraft positional information, as well as better quality air traffic management (ATM).

Under the guidance of ISRO, Indian Reference Station (INRES) has been installed by AAI at 15 strategic areas across the country to collect measurement data and broadcast messages from all the GPS and GEO satellites to the Indian Master Control Centre (INMCC) in Bangalore.

AAI is also planning to install automatic dependent surveillance-broadcast (ADS-B) at 14 airports in July as part of the project.

"ADS-B, which helps in tracking aircrafts as part of next generation air transportation systems, will be useful as a supplementary devise, especially when the radar fails or becomes withdrawn for some reason," Somasundaram said.
