Tambo International Airport in South Africa has opened a new central terminal building ahead of the FIFA World Cup 2010.

The $295m terminal is expected to handle the increase in passengers predicted during the World Cup, according to businessweek.com.

The airport’s capacity has been increased to 28 million passengers a year from its previous capacity of seven million passengers a year through various expansion projects carried out over the past 15 years.

The facility can handle nearly 60,000 passengers a day and can move about 60 aircraft an hour – an amount that could increase to 72 an hour for the FIFA World Cup event.
