Tambo Airport Rail Link on Track

A rapid rail line between Sandton and Tambo International Airport in South Africa will be ready before the FIFA World Cup starts in June 2010.

The project is aimed at easing transportation routes for passengers and tourists arriving at the airport for the soccer event.

Civil construction works are complete along the entire airport link, which includes 11 bridges, three viaducts, as well as structures built for a future station at Modderfontein, according to businessday.co.za.

Installation of ticket vending machines, fare gates and public address systems at the airport station is complete, along with platform structures and canopies.

Landscaping, tiling and construction of emergency stairs is yet to be completed.

The Gautrain Rapid Rail Link is a state-of-the-art rapid rail network planned in Gauteng, comprising of two links – one between Pretoria and Johannesburg and another between OR Tambo Airport and Sandton.
