Plans for a second runway at Stansted Airport have come under threat after it emerged that the UK Government is considering constructing another runway at Gatwick Airport instead.

The House of Commons Transport Committee has published a report that calls for a radical rethink of the government’s airports policy.

The committee says it is ‘unconvinced’ that there is a national case for an additional runway at Stansted, and points out that the delays to making a final decision on the second runway, coupled with the recession and declining passenger numbers, has meant the project is unlikely to be completed before 2019.

A restriction on a second runway at Gatwick also expires in 2019 and the committee has instead urged the government to consider constructing an additional runway there instead.
