Auckland International Airport in New Zealand has unveiled a new system called Smartgate, which clears arriving overseas passengers electronically through passport control.

The new kiosk and gate system uses biometric facial recognition technology to automatically check arriving passengers.

The airport is also planning to use the technology for departing passengers.

The same system will be installed at two other airports in New Zealand – Wellington International Airport and Christchurch International Airport – by mid 2010.
