Refurbishment work has begun at Akanu Ibiam International Airport in Nigeria as part of an international status upgrade proposal.
The $28m (NGN4.1bn) reconstruction work will include lengthening the runway from 2.4km to 3km and increasing its width from 4.5m to 6m.
The work is expected to be completed within 12 months and will help the airport accommodate wide-bodied aircraft.
The project will be overseen by PW Construction.
