Hambantota International Airport Project in Mattala, Sri Lanka is now officially open for operations.

The airport, which will become the nation’s second international airport on completion, has been designed according to recommendations by the International Airports and Aviation Organisation.

The 800ha airport, estimated to cost over $190m (Rs22bn), will consist of one runway and a taxiway, which is expected to be extended at a later stage to accommodate larger aircraft.

The airport is expected to serve over 800 passengers during peak hours, and will concentrate on airfreight and cargo operations in the first five years.
