Smiths Detection has been awarded a contract by the Canadian Air Transportation Security Authority (CATSA) to install advanced checkpoint X-ray systems at its airports.

Existing airport checkpoints will be fitted with Advanced Threat Identification X-ray (aTiX) devices, which offer automatic detection of explosives in liquids and hand luggage.

CATSA has begun installation of 31 X-ray scanning machines at Vancouver International Airport that are expected to be operational by the end of the year.

The aTiX technology will offer multiple-view images of passengers’ carry-on baggage and will streamline the detection process and improve traffic flow.

Over 145 aTIX machines have been purchased and will be installed in Vancouver, Toronto, Montreal, Edmonton and Halifax.
