Sharjah International Airport in the UAE will build a new 4,000m second runway to cater for increasing passenger traffic volumes.

Sharjah Airport Authority is expected to award contracts for the planned category 3 (CAT III) runway soon.

The the project’s master plan has been completed and construction is expected to begin in 2010, with the runway due to become operational by 2012.

The airport also plans to build a second terminal and improve safety measures at the airport by working with the UAE’s General Civil Aviation Authority.
