Both the International Air Transport Association (IATA) and the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) have called for the global aviation industry to reduce its emissions in the post-Kyoto period.

ICAO’s proven track record for dealing with aircraft noise was highlighted by IATA’s director general and CEO Giovanni Bisignani, who has asked for a similar approach to curb aircraft emissions.

The aviation industry has pledged conformance to three targets which include improving average annual fuel efficiency by 1.5% by 2020, stabilising emissions with carbon-neutral growth from 2020 and reduce net emissions by half by 2050.

IATA has identified technology, infrastructure and sustainable biofuels as three means of achieving these targets.
