Oman’s Ras Al-Hadd International Airport will begin the second phase of its redevelopment programme after selecting the engineering and contracting company Galfara to carry out the $105m (RO40.5m) project.

Phase I, which is almost complete, included the construction of roads, communications and power facilities.

Phase II involves the construction of a 4km runway, taxiway and apron, as well as the provision of fuel hydrant facilities and navigation aids.

Phase III tenders are scheduled to take place in 2010 and involve the construction of a 20,000m² passenger terminal building, an air traffic control tower, boarding bridges, baggage handling and security systems, and fire-fighting facilities.

The airport is expected to begin operations in 2012.
