The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has announced that serious runway incursions in 2009 at US airports have been reduced by 50% in comparison to last year.
During 2008, US airports recorded approximately 25 incursions, nine involving commercial carriers. This figure has been halved in 2009 to 12 incursions with two by commercial carriers.
In 2007, the FAA reported 24 serious runway incursions, which prompted the authority to launch a new runway safety programme.
The programme saw the installation of new technology, proper signage and markings and the retraining of pilots at a large number of US airports.
The FAA is hosting the first international runway safety meeting on 1-3 December in Washington DC in a continuous effort to improve runway safety at airports.
