Munich Franz Josef Strauss Airport (MUC) in Germany is planning to expand its operations despite dismal passenger traffic figures, in a bid to capitalise on non-aviation income.

A third runway and a new satellite building to Terminal 2, which will include 8,000m² of commercial space, are being planned.

The central zone of T1 will be improved to create more retail outlets and an increased food and beverage area.

Munich Airport CEO Michael Kerkloh has identified that non-aviation income is 47% of the airport’s turnover, and retail is a critical part of that.

Passenger traffic in August 2009 was down by 3.1% compared to August 2008, but improved in comparison to the 4.2% fall in July and the 9.2% drop in June.

The airport handled 3,035,915 passengers in August 2009, with intercontinental traffic cited as the key reason for the improving figures.
