Boston Logan International Airport in the US is to install Sensis airport surface detection equipment model X (ASDE-X).

The move follows recent news that New Jersey airport has also installed the software, which provides a comprehensive picture of all vehicles and aircraft running on an airport’s taxiways and runways.

The system is also designed to meet the challenge of providing accurate, reliable surveillance in all weather conditions as a result of multiple surveillance sources.

ASDE-X offers air traffic controllers real-time position and detection data for vehicles and aircraft on the airport surface through multilateration, surface movement radar and automatic dependent surveillance – broadcast (ADS-B).

The system is the foundation for the FAA’s runway status lights (RWSL) programme and is suitable for ADS-B and other next-gen systems.

By 2011, the FAA expects to incorporate ASDE-X at 35 airports.
