The New Delhi Government has revealed its plans to construct an international airport in Meerut, India to cope with possible air traffic surge to the Indian capital before the 2010 Commonwealth Games begin.
The airport would also be used for international Hajj flights and would link the state of Uttar Pradesh in north India to the rest of the country.
Nearly Rs73 crore has been allotted for the acquisition of land for the airport site.
The land acquisition process will commence once the required clearances have been given by the civil aviation, forests and environment, and air force ministries.
The state Civil Aviation Department has already performed research on the region’s traffic density, after which the Civil Aviation Ministry has sanctioned the project ‘in-principle’.
