Spain’s Barcelona Airport has opened its new environmentally friendly $1.7bn Terminal 1 (T1), which has hundreds of solar panels integrated into its roof.
The sword-shaped terminal was designed by the Spanish architectural firm Bofill and has floor-to-ceiling glass walls allowing natural light into the building. The terminal has an aluminum roof with solar panels which will provide energy for heating about 70% of the facility’s water.
The terminal also features 49 moving walkways, 26 mechanical ramps, 48 escalators and 125 elevators. The 256,181ft² shopping area includes four VIP lounges, a spa, fitness centre, a hair salon and a multifaith chapel.
