Oman has started inviting bids for a major airfield infrastructure project at a greenfield airport in Sohar.

The contract includes construction of a 4,000m runway and a full-length taxiway that features high-speed exits. The runway will have a width of 75m width and accommodate major aircraft such as the A380.

Other contract work includes water and power networks, airside roads, navigation aids and fuel-firefighting systems.

Once the Sohar project is complete, the airport will be able to accommodate 100,000t of air cargo and 500,000 travellers a year.

The airport is scheduled to open in 2012 and will function as a contingency option to Muscat International Airport.
