Heathrow Airport in the UK has unveiled a proposal for a new £1bn Terminal 2 aimed at accommodating Star Alliance airlines with a capacity of 20 million travellers annually.

The plan for Terminal 2 is part of an overall £4.8bn airport investment, which will offer passengers a range of improved services and new facilities.

The new terminal will feature a 11,300m² floor area and include fast bag drops, self-service check-in equipment, 15 security search lanes and conventional check-in desks.

The nine new aircraft parking stands will be able to accommodate the Airbus A380, which will be overlooked by a double-level departure lounge.

The expanded facility is designed to consume 40% less carbon than the building it replaces. Other green features include roof-top solar panels and a new energy centre, partially powered by renewable sources that will help heat and cool the structure.

The project will be constructed in two phases to decrease inconvenience to travellers.

The initial construction will take place on the airport’s existing Queen’s Building and Terminal 2 with demolition of the two structures due later this year.

The project’s second phase involves expanding the new Terminal 2 into the current Terminal 1 site alongside building a second satellite structure to augment the annual capacity of Terminal 2 to 30 million passengers a year.

Terminal 1 will remain operational until the second phase of construction is finished in 2019.

Foster + Partners drafted initial designs for the new terminal that were subsequently developed by HETCO.
