Sacramento International Airport in the US is to construct a new baggage handling system following its recent grant of $11m in federal stimulus funds.

The funds will be used to purchase a new system that will replace standalone screening units in the airport’s old Terminal B.

Sacramento is one of three airports to receive funds under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act from the US Department of Homeland Security.

Sacramento Airport is currently undergoing a $1bn expansion programme that also involves the construction of an automated tram system and a new central terminal building.

The project is likely to reach completion in late 2011 or the beginning of 2012.
