Denver International Airport in the US has received approval from the Denver City Council committee for a renovation contract worth $160m.
The seven-year contract involves the potential closure of the airport’s Great Hall to all but ticketed travellers.
The project generated controversy in July due to its cost and the disruptions it will have on the Great Hall.
Council officials considered completing the contract in phrases but it has since be decided that the project will go ahead in its entirety.
They argued that approval of the full seven-year contract with Parsons Transportation Group will allow time for the Great Hall renovation to be studied while planning is completed on less controversial changes at the facility. This includes an extension to the FasTracks light-rail system, redevelopment of the baggage area and construction of an airport hotel which is due next year.
