Tucson Airport Authority has begun upgrading Tucson International Airport’s commercial aircraft parking apron in the US.

The upgrade involves construction of a new concrete cement apron at the terminal ramp’s east end and rearrangement of the service road between the airport’s airfreight complex and its terminal.

The project also includes new area lighting, security fencing, security gate and expansion of a concrete blast wall along the apron’s north edge.

The $8m upgrade will provide tenants accommodations for an extra 44,000 square yards for overnight parking and commercial aircraft manoeuvring next to the existing aircraft parking apron.

Granite Construction Company is handling construction of the project, while Stantec Consulting handled the design.

The Arizona Department of Transportation and Federal Aviation Administration have financed the project.

The upgrade is expected to be completed by early 2010.
