The US Department of Transportation has granted $8.9m to finance a construction project at Sacramento International Airport in the US.

The funds will be used to build a crossfield taxiway, overnight parking for aircraft and a terminal apron.

The $1.1bn project will replace the old Terminal B and add a new tram system to the airport.

According to airport officials, the new facilities would better cater to customer needs, generate hundreds of jobs for the county and ensure that the airport can handle a rise in air carrier activities.

The initial proposal, which also included a hotel and parking garage, was cancelled due to restricted funds.
