Newark Liberty International Airport in the US has commissioned the Airport Surface Detection Equipment-Model X (ASDE-X), an advanced ground radar system to improve safety at the airport.
The new runway safety system collects data from various sources and provides air traffic controllers with colour map displays showing the location of all aircraft and vehicles on the runways as well as taxiways.

ASDE-X starts an alarm when a plane crosses the lines that shows the edges of the runway on which another plane is landing.
The system also alerts with a visual alarm on the controller’s screen and shows data tags for arriving and departing aircraft.
Using the new system, controllers will now able to pick certain areas to highlight on the display and zoom in to get a better view of what’s happening in each area.
ASDE-X will help controllers to mark taxiway closures and safety areas on the screen.
