Kennedy International Airport in the US will close its 2.75-mile-long runway, the second longest in the US, for four months in 2010 as a part of $204m refurbishment programme.
The project will include rehabilitation of the runway, which was last resurfaced in 1993.
The runway will be closed from 1 March 2010 to 29 June 2010 as construction crews replace 5in of the asphalt surface with more durable concrete.
Most of the work will be done at night so as to avoid any disruption to passengers travelling through the airport.
The 14,572ft-long runway is being reconstructed in association with Federal Aviation Administration, which handles air traffic control.
Air traffic controllers at the airport will divert flights to three other runways as runway renovation work starts.
California-based Perini Construction has won the renovation contract of runway 13R-31L, which has managed more than 143,000 take-offs and landings.
The project is expected to be complete by November 2011.
