The £50m modernisation of terminal 1 at Manchester Airport in the UK has been completed.

The airport overhaul project is a part of an £80m investment programme across the north-west’s three busiest airport terminals.

The project involved the creation of new airside shopping and catering facilities as well as a redesigned flow to make passenger journeys more comfortable.

The airport partnered with leading retail property developer Milligan to redesign the new terminal after receiving feedback from the airport’s expert psychologists who considered various areas such as car parks, check-in facility and security.

The airport has also installed a 14-lane security area at a cost of about £14m to reduce queuing times and improve passenger comfort. Retailers have also invested almost £15m to set up 52 shops.

Manchester Airport managing director Andrew Cornish said that the liquid ban and the terrorist attack on Glasgow Airport meant that the airport had to take plans back to the drawing board several times, always putting passengers’ safety and security at the forefront of the designs.
